Mandriva Linux, also known as Mandrake Linux, was a Linux distribution that was first released in 1998. It was initially based on Red Hat Linux and later on became a completely independent distribution. Mandriva Linux aimed to provide a user-friendly and intuitive operating system for both desktop and server use. It featured the KDE desktop environment by default, but also offered support for GNOME and other desktop environments. The distribution included a variety of pre-installed applications, such as office productivity software, media players, web browsers, and development tools. It also had a custom package management system called "urpmi" which made it easy to install and update software packages. Mandriva Linux went through several releases and updates over the years, with the latest version being Mandriva 2011, released in August 2011. However, the development and support for Mandriva Linux gradually declined, and the project was ultimately discontinued in 2015. After the discontinuation of Mandriva Linux, its community developers forked the project and created a new distribution called OpenMandriva. OpenMandriva continues to be developed and released as a free and open-source operating system.
